Pope’s
Tavern
is one of the oldest structures in Florence and has served many
purpose s
throughout the years. This one time stagecoach, tavern and inn
served as a hospital for both Confederate
and Union Forces throughout the Civil War. It is located on what
was known as Jack son’s
Military Road, and Andrew Jackson himself is said to have stayed
there on his way to the Battle of New Orleans.
Today, the museum
houses memorabilia and antiques from the 18th
and 19th centuries, as well as a wealth of l ocal
history and pioneer
artifacts, including a large collection of Civil War items.
Pope’s Tavern hosts
the annual Frontier Day celebration the first full we ekend
each June. The event features arts, crafts and dulcimer music.
